When it comes to Uncle Sam…blood is not thicker than water.

 

Rapper NAS is facing an inflated bill from U.S. tax officials - the money he allegedly owes has spiraled from $2.6 million (£1.6 million) to more than $3.4 million (£2.1 million).

 

The hip-hop star was hit with the initial bill from officials at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in October last year (09), and claims he had failed to keep up with his tax payments in 2006 and 2007.

 

Nas is already facing financial problems stemming from his ongoing divorce battle with estranged wife Kelis - last July (09) a judge ordered the rapper to pay his former partner $5,000 (£3,330) a month in child support for his son Knight.

It appears as if one-time hip-hop couple Nas and Kelis aren’t as filthy rich as some fans might expect. The couple was in court for two days earlier this week for a divorce hearing, and both parties revealed that they have a few financial shortcomings. Kelis acknowledged during the proceedings that she recently signed a 175-thousand-dollar contract with Interscope Records. The “Bossy” singer’s attorney claims, however, that the majority of the contract was paid to managers, leaving Kelis with only 50-thousand-dollars. Kelis would go on to admit that her career is nowhere near where it was in 2003 when her hit track “Milkshake” was heating up the charts. The singer cites her latest single, “Acapella,” which was quietly released via her Twitter account. Kelis’ annual income could not be determined because she has not filed an income tax return in years.

Nas also acknowledged that he has some serious financial obligations. The rapper stated that he owes 700-thousand-dollars to his manager and two-point-five-million-dollars in back taxes to the IRS. Nas went on to testify that he would not release a solo album next year, but did not discuss whether or not that included his Damian Marley collaboration, “Distant Relatives.” Following the hearing, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Cunningham ordered the emcee to pay Kelis 51-thousand-101-dollars a month in spousal and child support. Nas was reportedly paying nearly 40-thousand-dollars a month in temporary support. Wednesday’s ruling did relieve Nas of having to pay the 13-thousand-dollar a month mortgage on the pair’s Los Angeles home where Kelis currently lives.

 

Nas and Kelis tied the knot in 2005. Kelis filed for divorce this past April citing “irreconcilable differences.” The singer gave birth to a baby boy named Knight in July, which is the couple’s only child.

Kelis claims estranged hubby Nas has left her high and dry … not offering her a penny in the wake of her impending birth … and she says she’s broke — “I have run out of money.”

Kelis filed legal papers claiming Nas isn’t paying her support, pre-natal expenses — nothing, even though she claims he is filthy rich.

Kelis is asking the judge to order Nas to pay spousal support, child support, all pregnancy-related expenses, and one-half of all medical expenses after the child is born. She also wants $3,500 for the baby nurse after the child’s birth, and $20,000 for strollers, cribs and other baby supplies.

Kelis says, “My survival is based on [Nas'] will at this time. If he does not want to pay for an expense, it does not get paid.” The couple was married in 2003. The baby is due this month.

Kelis says she’s entitled to maintain the lifestyle to which she became accustomed during their marriage — they have five homes, fly first class, go to fancy restaurants, and on and on. Most interesting — “There were many expensive pieces [of jewelry] such as a princess-cut diamond tennis bracelet that was recently appraised for $190,000. My engagement ring is an approximately nine-carat cushion-cut diamond solitaire. I have numerous watches…such as Cartier, Rolex, Frank Muller and Chopard.”

Kelis' lawyer, Laura Wasser, says in a separate declaration she’s asked Nas to ante up some $$$ for Kelis and the unborn baby but he hasn’t responded.
